Wayfinders and Innovators

Remarkable scientific, environmental and social policy initiatives by friends of CartaNova.

To kick off our new 'Wayfinders' series featuring innovative not-for-profits, we'd like to introduce you to our friends at ONE DC.  Hailing from the famous Shaw Neighbourhood of Washington D.C. (Langston Hughs, Duke Ellington), ONE DC helps poor residents across the city to find good jobs, own their buildings, and to preserve their neighborhoods.

We're starting a new series on CartaNova's Blog called Wayfinders (a name borrowed from this book) to highlight organizations engaged in innovative community and environmental work.

My hope is that our readers will connect with some of these stories and volunteer a small amount of time and/or resources towards helping these good projects succeed.  Stay tuned!

Have you heard of Joomla!™?  Joomla!™ is a user-friendly content-management-system (CMS) powering many sites across the web. Here are a few reasons why we love creating Joomla!™ sites and volunteer on the Joomla! project.

We're happy to relate that one of our oldest clients, The Bike Train has announced pilot service to Muskoka area on their new Ontario North lines this August and September.  Be sure to check out this great Bike Train Video.

They won NASA's Space Elevator Prize ($900,000!) in 2009 - claiming first place in stage one of the Power-Beaming competition.  Their past work includes a shockingly accurate mosquito-zapping 'laser fence' [video] with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  They are LaserMotive! We're very excited to present this exclusive interview.

The LUNA Project is an off-grid eco-education centre located in Southern Ontario, near the city of Hamilton.  It is not just a nice place to visit – it is home for LUNA Project founder David Masters. Seeking to get closer to nature, David built a yurt and began transforming old farmland into sustainable forest.
