How to Manually Install a Magento Extension

Magento eCommerce is wonderful, powerful software that includes a download manager for installing Magento Extensions (add-ons) directly from their Magento Connect service.

However, auto-installation may not always be available or be the best option (for example, the download manager may not work with a site-duplicate testing area or on a local server).  Here's how to manually install a Magento extension.

Manually Installing a Magento Extension in Three Easy Steps:

  1. Login to Magento Connect, login and grab the 'extension key' for your preferred extension.
  2. Head over to Freegento.  Paste in the key and download.
(Freegento will provide you with a downloadable, paste-able zip file for the extension).
  3. Upload the zip file to your site via FTP or your preferred file manager, and extract it to the appropriate directory. *Note: Check out your download first.  You may need to re-zip it a touch, or eliminate a parent folder.

..and that's it.  Freegento has been a lifesaver for working with our Magento staging area.  Be sure to check it out!
